No decision made on raising of Maggie B

The Department of Transport has said a decision has not yet been made into whether the Maggie B, which sank six weeks ago, will be lifted from the sea bed.

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board is examining why the boat sank off the south Wexford coast with the loss of two lives, Glen Cott from Cork and Jan Sankowski from Poland.

The family Mr Cott has called on the Government to show compassion by organising for the vessel to be lifted from the seabed.

The 15-metre boat, with three persons on board, went down in rough seas 8km south of Hook head. One Polish crewmember was rescued, but Mr Cott and Mr Sankowski were never found.

The boat lies 50 metres below the surface.

Another fishing boat which sank before Christmas, the Rising Sun, was in the same depth of water, and after a campaign, she was raised by the Government.

The Department of Transport, which is now in charge of marine safety matters, says it is important that the facts of the Maggie B tragedy be established, but the Cott family says this cannot be done without the boat being examined.

They already have 1,000 signatures on a petition supporting their campaign, and plans for a meeting with a Government minister were announced this evening.
