The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said that the European Constitution is the right choice for Europe, and the right choice for Ireland.
In a speech at Dublin City Hall to celebrate Europe Day, which is tomorrow, Mr Ahern said there was nothing automatic or inevitable about the European Union's future, and that we should not underestimate the human potential to make the wrong choices.
He said that this generation in Europe must make wise choices to value and nurture the European experiment, and to develop it further.
Mr Ahern said that while the constitution was in many respects a 'tidying up exercise', it was also a step of immense significance for the union, because it would confirm the EU's nature, copper-fasten its achievements and reassert its potential for a generation.
A series of events will mark Europe Day, including a 'cultural street party' on Dublin's South King Street at lunchtime.
There will be special session of the Dáil on Wednesday devoted to European issues, with an address by Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.
