Tony Blair - 'Naming date would paralyse government'

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has again declined to give a timetable for his departure from Downing Street, claiming that to do so would paralyse the UK government.

Mr Blair has been coming under increased pressure from many of his own MPs to name a date following the Labour Party's poor showing in last week's local elections in England.

At his monthly news conference in Downing Street, Mr Blair said people were fed up with speculation.

In a remark addressed at his backbenchers, Mr Blair said any attempt to reverse the New Labour project would consign the party to opposition.
