Agent 'surprised and upset' by Dunlop claim

A land agent has told the Mahon Tribunal he was surprised and upset at a claim by lobbyist Frank Dunlop that he was aware of plans to bribe councillors for rezoning.

Tim Collins denied he was at a meeting in January 1993 with Mr Dunlop and landowner, Paul Walls, at which payment to councillors was discussed in an attempt to rezone land in Malahide, north Dublin.

Mr Collins admitted it was probably he who introduced Mr Walls to Frank Dunlop, but said he would never dream of becoming involved in corruption.

The tribunal is investigating claims that Mr Dunlop paid Fianna Fáil Councillor Sean Gilbride a £1,000 bribe in an unsuccessful attempt to get lands at Kinsealy and Seatown rezoned.

Mr Gilbride denies the allegation.

Today, Mr Collins gave the tribunal permission to examine his account at Ulster Bank, Baggot Street, after inconsistencies in his evidence about when it was opened.

Tribunal Chairman Judge Alan Mahon, who has previously criticised Mr Collins about his evidence, said the tribunal expected more accuracy from him.
