The Taoiseach has said he is 'totally opposed' to nuclear power as a possibility for Ireland's future energy needs.

Speaking at the Engineers of Ireland annual conference in Dublin this morning, Bertie Ahern said while there had never been a national poll taken on the issue, he believed the vast majority of Irish people also had concerns about nuclear energy.

Mr Ahern said Ireland would be looking to other energy sources to meet its needs for the coming decade.

He added that with the population of Ireland expected to reach six million people in 30 years' time, there was enormous work to be done in meeting the country's future energy, health and transport needs.

The two-day conference is hearing from a number of Irish and international experts on how to best meet the country's growing needs.
