The Communications Workers Union has said it will do all in its power to block the sale of Eircom unless assurances are received on future pay and conditions for staff.
At its biannual conference in Cork, the union's President Jerry Browne criticised media coverage of the sale which he said was unfairly focused on the financial gains of employee shareholders.
He said some commentators had attempted to re-write history in dealing with Eircom's troubled past.
The union's General Secretary, Steve Fitzpatrick, said while the Employee Share Ownership Trust had a duty to protect its members’ interests, the union would be promoting the interest of both members and non-members of the ESOT.
However he said there was no division in the union's policy on this matter.
