St Michael's sale not ruled out

A spokesperson for the Christian Brothers has said the sale of St Michaels School in Inchichore in Dublin could not be ruled out.

The Christian Brothers Director of Education, Conor O’Brien, stressed, however, that the school is an educational asset and any disposal would be viewed very carefully.

Mr O’Brien said he did not have a final decision on the fate of the school building but he said it was an asset and all assets must be 'sweated'.

Earlier the Christian Brothers announced the closure of the long-established primary school.

Last night a Christian Brothers representative told the school's board of management that from June the school would be closed.

The news was greeted with shock by staff. There was also shock at the suddenness of the decision and at the short timeframe before closure.

The primary teachers' union, the INTO, has called for a review of the decision to close immediately. It says the school caters for some of the most disadvantaged children.

The Christian Brothers says the school has become unviable and the decision to close is being taken in the best interests of the children.

St Michael's CBS has been educating boys in Inchicore since the 1930s.
