Nepali protestors defy new curfew

Nepal - Protests enter 18th day

Thousands of protesters have defied a daytime curfew in Nepal, but the demonstrations against King Gyanendra have been less intense and more peaceful than in recent days.

However, at least 23 people were injured in clashes between police and protesters in different parts of the country's capital, Kathmandu.

Some of the injured were hit by rubber bullets, according to an official at a private hospital.

Today's curfew is the latest in a series of restrictions to try to halt protests sparked by King Gyanendra's decision 14 months ago to sack the government and assume full control of Nepal.

The king's offer on Friday to hand over power to an alliance of seven political parties has failed to quell protests against his rule, which entered an 18th day on Sunday.

Over 100,000 people broke a curfew to enter the city yesterday, prompting police to respond with gunfire and tear gas.

At least 150 people were injured.
