At least 50 people have been killed in a fire at a trade fair in the northern Indian city of Meerut. Over 100 were injured.
Police said a short circuit in wiring may have started the fire, which spread quickly through tents packed with shoppers.
Each steel-pole framed tent was about 100m long and had a one-way corridor with stalls on either side, making it extremely difficult for people to escape once the fire began.
Rescue workers reported difficulty reaching the site because of fading light and the large crowds of people who had gathered to search for relatives.
Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has expressed shock at the incident and conveyed his condolences to the relatives of those killed.
