Trade unions and students in France have condemned a decision by President Jacques Chirac to sign into law a controversial youth labour bill.
The law makes it easier for people to hire and fire people under the age of 26.
Union chiefs say they will press ahead with a general strike next week after Mr Chirac vowed to enact a modified version of the legislation.
Protestors took to the streets in Paris after the president made his announcement on television yesterday evening.
Over 100 people were arrested after shop windows were smashed, cars damaged and bottles thrown at police.
