Germany and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have issued a statement urging Iran to halt uranium enrichment.

The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, met the five other ministers in Berlin today to discuss a future strategy on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Yesterday, the Security Council approved a statement urging Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.

The ministers were also discussing what to do if Iran does not comply.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said after the meeting that sanctions could follow if Iran remains defiant.

However, China and Russia remain opposed to sanctions, let alone military action, against Iran.

Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo said there had already been enough turmoil in the Middle East.

'We do not want to see more turmoil introduced into the region,' he said.
