The body of Slobodan Milosevic was put on public display in Belgrade today, as up to 1,000 supporters converged to pay their final respects to the former Yugoslav president.

His coffin arrived at the city's Revolution Museum at around 1.30pm (12.30pm Irish time) this afternoon, some 90 minutes after it had been scheduled for display.

There was no explanation for the delay, but the crowd of supporters waited on the steps of the communist-era building.

Around a dozen police officers were called upon to control the crowd after some of them grew impatient and shattered a window pane near the building's entrance amid pushing and shoving.

Socialist Party officials have said the coffin will be displayed for the next two days to allow people to pay their respects.

It will then be transported to his hometown of Pozarevac, 70km southeast of Belgrade, for a family funeral on Saturday.

Mr Milosevic, 64, died last Saturday in his cell at the International War Crimes tribunal at The Hague.
