Manmohan Singh - Appeals for calm

The Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, has appealed for calm after a series of bomb explosions killed at least 15 people in the city of Varanasi yesterday.

Security has been stepped up in the city, which is an important Hindu holy site, as officials fear the blasts could trigger inter-religious violence.

There are extra police patrols around the bombed areas of the railway station and a temple.

The explosions happened just days after Hindus and Muslims fought one another in the nearby city of Lucknow.
