The Irish Nurses' Organisation has claimed that 455 patients were on trolleys in hospital A and E departments today, making it the highest total on record.

The organisation reported 39 patients on trolleys at St Vincent's in Dublin and 29 at Wexford General Hospital as the two hospitals with the highest levels of overcrowding.

However, the Health Service Executive disputes the figures and said that this evening there were a total of 363 patients on trolleys in A&E departments awaiting admission.
