Call for addressing of non-EU doctor position

The president of the Medical Council has said that the tenuous position given to non-EU doctors in the Irish health system will have to be addressed.

Dr John Hillery was addressing the annual general meeting of the Overseas Medics of Ireland.

He said that among the many important issues raised in the Report of the Lourdes Hospital Inquiry is its noting of the historically tenuous position for non-EU doctors in training in Ireland.

Dr Hillery said it seems to have contributed to the lack of questioning of practices by Dr Neary in the Drogheda unit.

He added that the current system of doctor registration should end and be replaced with a formal and transparent process of certification.
