The Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, has acknowledged that the upkeep of the electoral register needs to be addressed.

One expert, Odran Flynn, has said errors in compiling the register, which determines who can and cannot vote, could mean it contains upwards of 700,000 false names.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio’s This Week, Mr Roche said the problem of editing the register by removing the names of people who have died or have moved house is not a simple one.

Mr Roche said he was not sure if the problem would be resolved by the next General Election in 2007.
