At least 49 dead in Pakistan fighting

The Pakistani military has said that at least 49 people were killed in fighting with what it described as pro-Taliban Islamist militants in a tribal region near the Afghan border.

The fighting broke out yesterday when the militants seized a government building and attacked others in Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan region.

The military said 46 militants and three soldiers were killed.
