The Fianna Fáil organisation in the Taoiseach's constituency has decided that two other candidates are to accompany him on the ballot paper.
At a convention in the constituency of Dublin Central this evening, Fianna Fáil chose Senator Cyprian Brady and Cllr Mary Fitzpatrick, daughter of sitting Fianna Fáil TD Dr Dermot Fitzpatrick, to contest the next General Election alongside Bertie Ahern.
It is likely that Fianna Fáil will face a strong challenge to retain their second seat in Dublin Central from Sinn Féin candidate and MEP Mary Lou McDonald.
There was no vote at this evening's convention as the two other contenders Cllr Tom Stafford and Chris Wall withdrew in advance.
