A senior Islamic Jihad commander was killed in an air attack by Israel in Gaza this morning.
Khaled al-Dahduh, also known by his nom-de-guerre Abu al-Walid, was killed when a car exploded after being struck by an Israeli missile.
It took place hours after Palestinians fired a rocket towards the Israeli coastal town of Ashkelon. It landed in an empty field without causing any damage.
In another incident, a Jewish settler manning a service station was shot dead by Palestinian gunmen near the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed the attack.
An accidental explosion of a container of road tar earlier caused panic in Gaza City. Many Palestinians thought the Israeli military had carried out an attack.
Police cars, ambulances and onlookers rushed to the scene after the blast, which caused no injuries.
Palestinian workers had been heating the tar for use in a road repair when it exploded.
