US President George W Bush has arrived in New Delhi on his first visit to India which will include talks on a landmark deal on civilian nuclear trade.

Mr Bush, accompanied by his wife Laura and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, was met by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the start of a three-day visit.

On his way there, Mr Bush made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan, his first visit to the country.

He met President Hamid Karzai and other officials of the US-backed Afghan government.

In the early hours of this morning, he made a brief refuelling stop at Shannon Airport.

Air Force One touched down shortly after midnight.

Mr Bush disembarked for about 20 minutes during which he had his picture taken with some 200 US troops who were on their way to Kuwait.

Mr Bush's flight took off at around 2am.
