Aer Lingus - Plans to privatise part of the airline

SIPTU shop stewards in Aer Lingus are to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday amid expectations of that the Government is to announce plans to privatise part of the airline.

The union is opposed to the privatisation of Aer Lingus, and has criticised the Government for not consulting with trade unions on the future of the airline.

The decision to sell part of Aer Lingus was made last year but the Government has not yet finalised plans the sale. It is expected that the company will be floated on the stock market.

Unions are reported to be concerned about elements of the company's business plan including future job security and the pension scheme which has a projected shortfall of several hundred million.
