The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has confirmed that he intends to appeal a decision to suspend him temporarily from office.

Mr Livingstone was suspended for four weeks by a three-man disciplinary tribunal for bringing his office into disrepute by making a remark about Nazi concentration camps to a Jewish newspaper reporter.

In a statement he said: 'I have instructed my legal representatives to lodge an appeal today and will be asking for the suspension to be stayed until an appeal on whether there was a breach of the code of conduct, and also whether the sanction was appropriate, has been heard.'
