IKEA seeks planning leave for Ballymun

IKEA - Seeks Dublin planning permission
IKEA - Seeks Dublin planning permission

The Swedish furniture retailer, IKEA, was due to lodge a planning application for its first Irish store in Dublin today.

The company wants permission from Fingal County Council to build a 30,000sq m shop in Ballymun.

Last year, the Government decided to remove a limit on the size of retail outlets in certain designated areas.

If planning permission is granted, the new store will create up to 500 jobs.

IKEA's project manager in Ireland, Theresa Daly, said she believed the application met all the tests of national policy as well as local and national planning guidelines.

The company has rejected suggestions that the new shop will lead to traffic congestion on the M50 motorway.

IKEA and the local authority say a traffic management plan will be put in place in the area.

The plans for the store have been criticised by the Green Party and organisations representing independent retailers and the Irish Hardware and Building Materials Association.
