The RNLI, which operates more than 40 lifeboat stations in Ireland, says it needs increased donations to continue its life saving efforts.

More than 1,100 people were rescued by the organisation last year.

The Kilmore Quay and Dún Laoghaire stations were the busiest in the country, launching more than 50 times each and saving over 150 people.

The organisation says funding its activities is tough.

As well as monitoring the sea, the RNLI also has two inland lifeboats in Enniskillen and Lough Derg.

Those volunteer crews rescued almost 90 people last year alone.

The RNLI aims to raise around €14m over the next five years to train volunteers. Without funding, it says, the service will suffer.
