A US military spokesperson has said that rescuers have yet to recover any survivors from the village in the Philippines that was submerged by a landslide.

This contradicts earlier reports that 50 people had been found alive in a buried school in the village of Guinsaugon.

It is thought that up to 250 children and staff were in the school at the time of the landslide.

The office of Civil Defence says the latest information suggests that just over 1,350 people remain missing compared to an earlier estimate of 1,800.

The village on the island of Leyte was destroyed by a mudslide on Friday.

The US military has committed 3,000 troops to the rescue effort as heavy rain continues to hamper rescue efforts in the affected area.

The President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, is due to visit the scene of the disaster, about 675km southeast of Manila, in the coming days.

The Philippines is usually hit by about 20 typhoons each year, with residents and environmental groups often blaming illegal logging or mining for compounding the damage caused by flooding.

The populations of nine other villages have now been moved to evacuation centres for fear of further landslides in the mountainous area.
