The first cases of bird flu in India have been detected after 50,000 birds died in the western state of Maharashtra.
A state official said tests confirmed the presence of the lethal H5N1 strain of the virus in some of the dead chickens in Nandurbar district.
He said the situation is being treated as an emergency and steps are being taken to cull birds in the region.
There are no reports of human infections.
