IMO warns of GP waiting lists

The Irish Medical Organisation has warned that public patients could soon face waiting lists to see their GP, unless the Government properly funds the family doctor service.

At a national conference of GPs in Dublin the organisation's GP leader, Dr Martin Daly, said just 30% of the family doctor service is funded by the state.

He said it was not attractive for GPs to work longer hours or set up in disadvantaged areas.

Jim Power, Chief Economist with Friends First, said the health service would never be improved unless the problem of so many vested interests pulling in different directions is solved.
