Government ministers in Iraq have reacted angrily to the broadcast of further images showing prisoners apparently being tortured and humiliated by US soldiers in Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.

The images, said to date from 2003, were first shown on an Australian television channel and have since appeared in the media around the world.

The Iraqi Minister of Planning and Development, Dr Barham Salih, said there were lessons to be learned from the abuse.

Following the broadcast of the images, US civil liberties groups have called for a fresh inquiry into allegations of abuse at Abu Ghraib.

US State Department legal adviser John Bellinger insisted the photos had already been seen by Congress but had not been published because they invaded the privacy of prisoners.

Mr Bellinger said the publication of the pictures now could lead to more violence.
