Hospital officials in Israel say Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is out of danger following emergency surgery earlier.
Doctors say that Mr Sharon's condition has improved and he has been moved back to intensive care.
Mr Sharon, who is 77, has been in a coma since suffering a stroke on 4 January.
Doctors decided to operate after they discovered his digestive tract had suffered serious damage. Doctors had inserted a feeding tube into his stomach earlier this month.
A spokesperson for Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital said earlier that Mr Sharon’s condition was very serious and that his life was in danger.
Mr Sharon's failure to wake up following an induced coma last month has led to speculation that he has suffered severe brain damage.
Since his collapse, Ehud Olmert has stepped in as interim Prime Minister and he is due to lead the centrist Kadima party in the general election on 28 March.
