Britain’s Liberal Democrats have won a dramatic Westminster by-election victory, taking a previously safe Labour seat in the Scottish constituency of Dunfermline and Fife West.
The party overturned a Labour majority of 11,500.
Commentators say the result is a blow for the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, who represents a neighbouring constituency and campaigned strongly.
The Lib-Dem victory comes despite the turmoil in the party after the resignation of Charles Kennedy as leader.
