A Dublin businessman whose lands were rezoned in the early 1990s has admitted making payments totalling more than £45,000 to politicians.

Christopher Jones has told the Mahon Tribunal that the money was paid for political expenses and was not connected to rezoning of land in Ballycullen in Tallaght.

However, former Government press secretary Frank Dunlop has said he personally paid a total of £11,000 to nine councillors.

Mr Jones has admitted paying the late Liam Lawlor £17,800, Don Lydon of Fianna Fáil £7,000, GV Wright of Fianna Fáil £5,500 and John O'Halloran (Independent) £3,000.

A large number of other politicians received payments ranging from £250 to £2,500. The politicians have also claimed the payments were for political expenses.

The evidence was heard at in the opening statement of a new module entitled Ballycullen/Beechill which is inquiring into the deal of the rezoning of the lands owned by developers Christopher and Gerry Jones.
