Minister seeks end to Westlink barriers

Transport Minister Martin Cullen has said that the plan for the M50 is to have one automatic, barrier- free tolling system.

Asked about the proposal to spend around €600m on buying out National Toll Roads, the operators of the Westlink, the Minister said he wanted an end to the fixed barriers there and also to take National Toll Roads 'off the pitch' as best he could.

He was speaking on The Week in Politics programme to be broadcast on RTE One Television tonight.

The Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell will say that the tolls are just a tax on work because the Government has failed to develop a proper public transport system.
