US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said the US hopes Iran will heed the 'clear message' from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which voted overwhelmingly today to report Tehran to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear programme.
The resolution was approved by 27 votes to three, with five abstentions.
The resolution put off any UN action against Iran for at least a month, to allow time for diplomacy until the next meeting of the IAEA in March.
Following the decision, Iranian State Television announced that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had ordered an end to all snap inspections by the IAEA from tomorrow.
Iran says its nuclear programme is designed solely to generate electricity and claims a sovereign right to make uranium fuel on its own soil.
