Officials in the Phillipine capital, Manila, say that 73 people were killed and at least 392 were injured in a stampede started when crowds tried to enter a stadium where a television game show was offering cash and prizes.

Some officials said that the stampede was sparked by rumours of a bomb but survivors said it was just the sheer weight of the crowd that forced open the steel gate at the sole entrance of the Ultra stadium.

The steel barrier had been preventing the crowd from moving toward the stands.

People then tried to squeeze through the narrow passageway where most of the dead were found.

'Wow-wow-wee' hands out cash to winners, and the top prize today was to have been a million pesos, around €16,000, in a country where 40% of the population live on around €1.50 a day.
