The Irish Farmers' Association has called for beet growers to be given 75% of the available EU compensation resulting from the shut down of the sugar industry in Ireland.
The association published its report from independent consultants today; the report suggested that farmers should get €106m out of the €145m compensation package.
The closure of the Carlow sugar factory was announced last February.
In December, following EU sugar reforms, it became clear that Ireland's only remaining factory in Mallow would probably have to close too.
Greencore has not yet said how long it will keep the Mallow factory open.
The IFA leader, Padraig Walshe, said it is up to the Minister for Agriculture, Mary Coughlan, to decide who should get the money. But he was adamant the bulk of it should not go to Greencore.
