The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, has signed regulations to allow school inspection reports to be published.
Reports on inspections which take place from Monday next will be published on the Internet and will be available to the public.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Ms Hanafin said she wanted to end the vacuum, which had been filled by school league tables published in newspapers.
