France seeks UNSC role in Iran talks

Iran - Talks over nuclear programme

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said Iran's response to international efforts at compromise over its nuclear programme is not very satisfactory.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy called for the UN Security Council to become involved, saying EU-Iran talks had hit a dead end.

Earlier, British officials said Iran presented no significant new proposals at today's talks in Brussels over Tehran's resumption of its controversial nuclear programme.

The EU and the US want Iran to be referred to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions over the issue.

The Iranian government says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Officials from Iran met foreign ministers from the so-called EU Three, Britain, France and Germany, to discuss Tehran's decision to resume its nuclear programme.

The matter will be raised in Vienna on Thursday at the headquarters of the UN nuclear body, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The EU3 will try to co-ordinate their position at separate talks in London this evening with their US, Russian and Chinese counterparts.
