Kenya building collapse toll rises

The death toll from the collapse of a building in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has risen to 12.

Today, rescue workers pulled out one of three people Kenyan police said were still trapped, and officials feared that many more would be found dead.

A rescue worker who fell into the wreckage overnight was also pulled out.

At least 106 people were seriously injured in yesterday's cave-in. However, Kenyan Red Cross workers continued to dispute the figures, saying that about 20 people had been killed.

Police were searching for the owner of the building who, according to a preliminary investigation, may have failed to comply with city construction codes.

More than 200 people, mainly construction workers, were believed to be inside the building or nearby when it collapsed, overwhelming Kenya's limited disaster response, and search and rescue capabilities.
