At least 39 die in Montenegro rail disaster

At least 39 people have been killed in a train crash in Serbia-Montenegro.

In the accident, the brakes failed on a packed passenger train and it jumped the tracks, sliding into a ravine.

A total of 135 people were injured, including 75 children.

Army and police helicopters hovered over the site of the crash as rescuers climbed down the steep slope in darkness to reach those trapped in carriages from the front of the train that were caught by trees 40 metres from the Moraca river below.

The country's deputy Prime Minister, Miroslav Ivanisevic, said that rescue operations were still under way and the toll figures were not final.

The train was travelling from the northern city of Bijelo Polje to the southern port of Bar when it derailed at Bioce, about 10km outside the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica.

Many of the passengers were thought to be families returning home from skiing trips.
