One person has been killed and 15 others wounded in a suicide bombing near Tel Aviv's former central bus station.

Israeli police have said that the sole fatality of the explosion was the suicide bomber.

It is reported that the bomber entered a food store on Solomon Street in Israel's commercial capital before detonating his explosives.

The area, which is frequented by foreign workers, has been the target of a number of suicide attacks in the past.

Ben Gurion International Airport reopens

Separately, Ben Gurion International Airport has reopened after shutting down briefly when the control tower failed to make contact with an incoming El Al flight

Air force jets intercepted the plane and escorted it down to the runway after its flight crew failed to make contact with the control tower as required by aviation procedure, a statement said.

The plane, a Boeing 757 from Israel's national carrier, was en route from Moscow and had 79 passengers on board.

Upon landing, security forces immediately took control of the plane, and the alert was lowered.

During the brief shutdown, no planes were given permission to take off or land from the airport, close to Tel Aviv.

Kadima widens lead - opinion poll

Israel's centrist Kadima party, led by the interim Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, has widened its lead in an opinion poll.

The survey found that Kadima would win 43 seats in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset.

The Israeli Labour party would win 21 seats while the right-wing Likud party, which Prime Minister Ariel Sharon left in November, would win 12 seats, according to the poll.

Mr Olmert took over as leader of Kadima from Mr Sharon after the 77-year-old leader suffered a stroke on 4 January.

A spokesperson for Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital said this morning that there had been no change in Mr Sharon's condition, described as serious but stable.

A general election is planned for 28 March.
