26 killed in Afghan suicide attacks

At least 26 people were killed in two separate suicide bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan today.

20 people were killed in a bomb attack in the town of Spin Boldak, near the border with Pakistan.

Officials said a bomber on a motorcycle detonated a device in a playground where hundreds of people had gathered for a festival in the town. A further 20 people were injured in the attack.

Earlier, three Afghan soldiers and two civilians were killed when a suicide bomber threw himself in front of an Afghan army vehicle in the heart of the provincial capital, Kandahar.

Four Afghan soldiers and 10 civilians were also wounded.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for both bombings.

Violent attacks have continued in Afghanistan since the Islamic hardline regime was ousted by US-led forces in late 2001.
