Figures released by the Garda Traffic Bureau show that the number of arrests for suspected drink-driving in the run up to Christmas were up significantly on the same period in 2004.
Almost 1,300 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day. This is up 14% on the same time last year.
Last year 399 people lost their lives on Irish roads. It was the worst year of carnage since 2001 when 411 people were killed.
Gardaí have estimated that a third of all fatal road accidents are drink-related.
Since the end of November, gardaí have been involved in a high profile road safety campaign. The current Christmas/New Year campaign will end next Sunday.
Gardaí have taken their campaign into schools to educate the drivers of tomorrow of the horrific effects of drink-driving, speeding and not wearing seat belts.
The Automobile Association has called for an increased and year- round Garda presence outside pubs and clubs throughout the country in their effort to combat the problem.
