Irishman killed in Australian plane crash

A 34-year-old Irishman, originally from Co Kildare, has been killed in a plane crash in Australia.

He was one of five people killed when the Cessna 206 light aircraft crashed into a dam and sank shortly after take-off from a skydiving centre in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

Ipswich police said witnesses saw a plume of smoke from the back of the plane before it clipped a tree and crashed into a reservoir.

Two people survived the accident and are being treated in hospital.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is offering consular assistance to the family of the dead man.
