Israel fires artillery into Gaza

The Israeli army bombarded an uninhabited area of the northern Gaza Strip with artillery today.

An army spokesperson confirmed that the troops had opened fire in open fields in the so-called 'no-go zone' after a deadline expired for Palestinians to leave a new security zone.

The spokesperson said the artillery fire was 'slightly larger scale' than previous bouts of firing.

The Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has appealed to militant groups to halt rocket attacks on Israel.
