The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, has sanctioned an increase of just under 4% in CIÉ and Luas fares.
The companies had applied for up to 7.5%.
The increase means dearer bus and rail transport in Dublin and throughout the country.
Luas says there will be no increase for those who buy smartcards or tickets through sales agents.
