Baghdad - 36 die in suicide bombing

At least 36 Iraqi police officers and students were killed and 72 other people were injured in a suicide bomb attack this morning on the Baghdad Police Academy.

The US military initially said two females walked into a classroom at the academy and blew themselves up, but later said the bombers were in fact men.

The bombing was later claimed by the al-Qaeda organisation in Iraq.

Eight other Iraqi security personnel were killed in violence across the country.

And nine bodies of men in their 30s were discovered near Musayyib, south of Baghdad. They had all been shot at close range.

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Islamic Army has said it has seized a US security consultant.

The group says he will be killed in 48 hours unless the US frees all the prisoners it is holding.

Earlier today, Iraqi police said that they had found the bodies of 20 people dumped in two separate locations in an area of western Iraq well known for insurgency violence.

Police said 11 men in civilian clothes were found yesterday near the town of Rutba next to the main highway that links Baghdad to the border with Jordan.

Police also said that the bodies of nine civilians had been found on Sunday beside a road near Fallujah, 50km west of Baghdad. All nine were said to have had gunshot wounds.
