The wife of the British hostage held in Iraq, Norman Kember, has made a televised appeal begging for his release.

Pat Kember said her husband was a very caring man who believed in peace and had come to Iraq to help its people.

Mr Kember, 74, was kidnapped in Baghdad last week along with two Canadians and a US citizen.

Mrs Kember's appeal was shown in a 30-second film by Arab broadcaster al-Jazeera.

Relatives of the men are awaiting developments in talks between a British Muslim envoy, Annas Altikriti and representatives of Sunni Muslims.

Mr Altikriti is hoping the influence of the Sunni groups will filter through to the kidnappers who have identified themselves as members of a previously unheard of organisation, the Swords of Truth Brigade.

A spokeswoman for Christian Peacemaker Teams in Jordan, Peggy Gish, denied allegations by the kidnappers that her colleagues were spies.

The kidnappers are reported to have threatened to kill the hostages if Iraqi prisoners are not released from US and Iraqi jails by Thursday.

Former RUC head to assess Iraq police

Former RUC Chief Constable, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, has been appointed to carry out an assessment of policing arrangements in four British-administered provinces in Iraq.

He has been asked to look at the capabilities of the Iraqi police and to determine what is needed to bring them up to the required standard.

It is believed that part of his brief will be to counter infiltration of the police by Iraqi insurgents.

Mr Flanagan has already paid one visit to Basra, the main city in the oil-rich south and headquarters of the British forces.

Meanwhile, police in Iraq say 19 Iraqi soldiers have been killed in an ambush north of Baghdad.

The convoy the soldiers were travelling in was first targeted by a roadside bomb, about 90km north of the capital. The police said a group of insurgents then opened fire on the survivors.

The ambush comes just two days after ten US marines were killed in a bomb attack near the town of Fallujah.
