Nine people died and five people were taken to hospital after a fire at a hostel for the homeless in Germany early today.
The fire at a temporary centre in the town of Halberstadt was reported at around 4.30 GMT, and was later brought under control.
Police initially said that ten people had died. A spokesman said that figure was based on a first inspection of the charred bodies of the victims.
Police said it was unclear what started the blaze, but that it may have been due to negligence or a technical problem. They said there was no indication of arson.
