The Government has given a commitment to a 70% increase in its support for ethical and fair trade development initiatives in Central America.

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Conor Lenihan, is in Nicaragua to support ethical development in the region.

Today's announcement brings the figure to be donated to Central American projects to $6m (€5.1m) over the next three years.

Over the last three years the Government has donated €187,000 to the Del Campo sesame seed federation.

The development arm of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Development Co-operation Ireland, has also supported a number of education projects in this region.
