Iran's nuclear programme - Govt considers reopening talks

The Iranian government has said it is ready to consider reopening talks with the European Union on its controversial nuclear programme.

The EU and the United States have refrained from pushing to have Iran referred to the UN Security Council, in order to give more time for a diplomatic solution.

A proposal that Iran be allowed conduct uranium enrichment in Russia in order to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons technology is being considered.

The idea has won backing from the US, and diplomats say talks could resume in December if Iran was ready to discuss the Russian proposal.

The US has repeatedly accused Tehran of trying to develop nuclear weapons - a charge which Iran strongly denies.

Iran's representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mehdi Akhondzadeh, said he was optimistic that talks could resume.
